Caring for China

Staff from the Little Farm in Newbury and the Haverhill Historical Society recognized the need for staff and volunteers of small museums and historic sites to be trained on proper collections care. After performing an informal survey of local sites asking what topics should be addressed, staff from the Little Farm planned a five-part evening workshop series. The topics were: basic site maintenance; care of textiles, metals and ceramics; disaster planning; opening and closing a site; and developing a collections care plan. This program served twenty-seven people from seventeen organizations in the region. Participants developed their own “housekeeping manuals” with procedures specific to their site and including some supplies such as gloves, mylar envelopes and acid-free envelopes.
