The Robert S. Peabody Museum is one of the nation's major repositories of Native American archaeological collections. Major collections include materials from the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, Southwest, Mexico, and the Arctic, and range from Paleo Indian (10,000+ years ago) to the present day. Since its founding in 1901 through the bequest of Robert Singleton Peabody, the museum has been an important center for archaeological research and education. An 1857 graduate of Phillips Academy with a passionate interest in archaeology, Peabody wanted to encourage young people's interest in the sciences, and to foster respect and appreciation for Native American peoples who have inhabited this hemisphere for thousands of years.
