- Join us at the Cape Ann Museum for an introduction to the Museum’s permanent exhibition of the work of the Folly Cove Designers and view "Folly Cove Designers," a 1987 documentary film featuring original designer members Aino Clarke, Louise Kenyon, Lee Natti, Dorothy Norton and Peggy Norton. The film reviews in detail the design, printing and jurying process and offers unique glimpses of these Cape Ann block printmakers at work. The Folly Cove Designers, a guild of designer-craftsmen, were established in Gloucester in 1938 and worked together from 1941 until 1969. The group gained national fame for their nature-inspired printed fabrics. The Museum’s archive of their work includes samples of their printed textiles and paper, items made from their fabric including dresses, curtains and table runners, and examples of the linoleum blocks they carved. An Acorn press used by one of the designers is also on display. Well-known children’s book writer and author Virginia Lee Burton was the founder of the Folly Cove Designers and there is currently a display of her sketch books and mock-ups for titles such as "The Little House" and "Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel."
