- Visit the home of John Greenleaf Whittier, the famous abolitionist, journalist, poet and essayist. Known as the Quaker Poet, John Greenleaf Whittier lived in Amesbury for his adult life where he produced most of his works, including his famous poem "Snowbound." - Directions: 86 Friend St. Amesbury, MA 01913 Take 95 N toward Salisbury/Portsmouth NH. Take Exit 58B /RT-110 W toward 495/Amesbury. Merge onto Rte 110/John Greenleaf Whittier Hwy/Macy St. Turn right onto Main St. Stay straight to go onto School St/Rte 150. Enter next rotary and take 3rd exit onto Friend St.
