On Friday, come to the Mary Baker Eddy House to learn how to embroider perforated paper from designs inspired by original pieces in the Bagley family collection in the house. This typically Victorian needle craft is well suited to card-making or framing. Saturday and Sunday will be a quilting demonstration. The house is open all three days for self-guided tours. English scenic murals on paper still in place and one of only two sets surviving in the world); and a block-printed pattern on the third floor that is the only 18th c. Frost of Marblehead when he was in his 70s, following the death of his beloved wife Anna. Dramatic scenes of a great September gale that destroyed half the town's fleet in 1846 and brought an end to fishing as the town's principal industry. One of the most important immigrant groups to populate Salem at the turn of the 20th century were French-Canadian immigrants who came to work in area mills and factories. French-Canadian immigrants from Quebec and their children made up 20% of the city's population and Salem was one of a handful of Massachusetts cities dubbed a "Petit Canada."
This tour will uncover the history of Franco-Americans in Salem, focusing primarily on the Point area, lower Lafayette Street, and parts of the business district. We will discover the places that were built, rebuilt, transformed, or repurposed by generations of French-Canadian immigrants.

At this beach seining demonstration, Salem Sound Coastwatch staff and volunteers will walk a large seining net into the water and then drag it back to shore where we'll lay it out, gather around to examine the catch and talk about what we found. Passamquoddy birchbark artist and canoe builder David Moses Bridges launches a recently built replica of a sailing, oceangoing birchbark canoe. Bridges will demonstrate its handling characteristics and durability and discuss the tools, materials, and process of canoe building. Native people of the Northeast developed the birchbark canoe as a means of transportation and cargo carrying, connecting communities up and down the Eastern seaboard. Special Instructions: This is an outdoor event --please dress appropriately for the weather. During the launch and in-water demonstration the best vantage point will be from a standing position along the wharf. You may wish to bring binoculars to observe the canoe as it travels in the water, or camp chairs to watch if there is space. Event Updated. Most current information is shown here. The exhibit features items collected from battlefields by Saugus soldiers, items carried in battle, and details about battles they experienced. Gustavus Vasa Fox, born in Saugus, was assistant secretary of the navy, a post Lincoln created especially for him. The U.S.S. Saugus was named in his honor - both Fox himself and the ironclad Saugus went on to serve the country in other ways after the war.
163 soldiers enlisted from Saugus. They fought in all the major battles over four years, and their experiences had a major impact on their lives and the town when they returned. The G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) was an active organization in Saugus, made up from men who lived in this town after the war. A portion of the exhibit features the G.A.R.'s Hinks Post 95 and its men who lived in Saugus after the war ended. Special Instructions: Display occupies one small room. There is also a shop with postcards, booklets and maps for sale relevant to other aspects of Saugus history.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer, Founder, and Leader of Christian Science, stayed in this home from 1865-1866. In February 1866 she was severely injured from a fall on an icy sidewalk. She was brought back to her room here and turned to her Bible for inspiration and healing. After reading an account of one of Jesus' healings she found herself suddenly well. Linoleum blocks carved at the shop are used to make cards and printed fabric for use in the home. Since Andover's founding, residents have prized the view from the 420-foot Holt Hill, named for its 17th century owner Nicholas Holt. In the 19th century, owner Mabel Ward commemorated her 1911 trip to Stonehenge with the placement of a ring of "Solstice Stones" on the hill's grassy summit.

After the great fire of 1882, Italian immigrants who had settled in and around Washington Street helped rebuild Haverhill's decimated Shoe industry. Master Italian masons laid the intricate brickwork that is so distinctive of the Queen Ann buildings. The walk will allow you to explore the part of the Italian district that includes River Street, Washington Street, and the lower part of Washington Hill. As one of Beverly's most familiar landmarks, this lighthouse commands a spectacular view of Salem Sound, and 3 other lighthouses at Baker's Island, Winter Island, and Marblehead. An enduring monument to Beverly's nautical heritage, it is an active aid to navigation and one of only 5 Massachusetts lighthouses that still retains its original Fresnel lens. Visitors will be guided by members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary up a winding staircase and then up a seven-step ladder to the lantern room. From there they will pass through the hatch onto the gallery balcony to enjoy the spectacular views. Don't forget to bring your cameras! Visit Website

Situated on the edge of the Great Marsh, the 1694 Paine House at Greenwood Farm is the site of 250 years of family farming. Take a walk through the property as we imagine the life of the men and women who first settled there. Local residents set-up fish-drying stages, pastured cattle communally, and harvested salt marsh hay. A tour through the Paine House will illuminate the unique features of this First Period structure and will highlight the role of women in the daily running of a Colonial household, including the provision of milk, cheese and butter for the family within an onsite dairy. This event features a group bike ride from the Topsfield Crossing shopping complex to Danvers at the Peabody line on the southern section of the Border to Boston Trail. We will ride over the redecked Ipswich River Bridge and past the beautiful Wenham Swamp with all it's wildlife. We will then continue through Danvers Center and over Route 114 bridge. The tour will turn around when it gets to the Avalon apartments and Brooksby Village and head back to Topsfield. Event capacity: 100.
