Here at the intersection of North Main, Lowell, Haverhill and Poor Streets, near the Shawsheen River and his home, "Arden" William Wood, president of the American Woolen Company, carefully planned Shawsheen Village, a model community of manufacturing, residential, commercial and recreational facilities. As you tour tree-lined streets, you will see popular classical revival styles of architecture with such details as ornamental center entrances, decorative cornices, doublehung windows with many panes, varied roof shapes and columned porticos. Architects, landscape designers, engineers and contractors used up-to-date materials and the most efficient technologies in the Village's construction. Look for physical evidence of the 18th and 19th century Frye Village, the mill community that Shawsheen Village replaced. The entire Shawsheen Village plan emulated Anglo-American roots, and today its historical and architectural integrity have been nationally recognized by its inclusion on the National Register of Historical Places. Local pride in this designation is indicated by the bronze plaque and boulder dedicated in 1979 by the Shawsheen Village Neighborhood Association.
