In the 1800's George Peabody was one of America's most trusted and well-known financiers. In the latter part of the century, Junius Morgan joined him as a partner; the firm they founded later became one of the world's most famous financial institutions.
The George Peabody House Musuem is a recently restored house and community cultural center maintained by the City of Peabody. The Museum has excellent exhibits on tanneries and the tanning process, including videos of people who worked in the tanneries. The house itself is an example of shoe making as a cottage industry in the early phase. The small scale replica of a Beam shop includes numerous leather-making artifacts. In addition to theme exhibits, the Civic Center has a lovely conference facility designed for meetings, receptions, and special exhibitions.
